Welcome! Welcome to the October newsletter. October has always been one of my favourite months - the long dark crisp evenings, Hallowe'en - but mainly because here in Wexford (South-East of Ireland) we host an annual and world-renowned Opera Festival, and the area really bursts into life for 20 days. Now, I've never actually attended any of the operas, but there is a huge line-up of fringe events - rock bands, folk bands, traditional irish music, art exhibitions. Probably the most enjoyable part is the Pub talent competition, which gives all local aspiring musicians and singers a chance to showcase their musical abilities, and gives the local population an excuse to visit the bars and hostelries in the area every night! If you get the chance, try to catch one of Irelands greatest festival atmospheres - you can check out the entertainment on show at http://www.wexlive.com. Visit the WexfordWeb to check out places to stay, things to see etc. If you can't be here, I hope you find some Hallowe'en festivities to bring your guitar along to! What's New: Just want to remind you that the GuitarBackingTracks project I have been working on with Chris Elmore from GuitarTips for some months was launched last month, and is getting great reviews. Guitar Backing Tracks has 50 looping tracks, at varying speeds, with drum, bass and synth sounds ( all studio recorded ), which you can just kick off, pick up your guitar and start jamming along with. Better still, we've created five sections, each with 10 drum tracks, 10 bass, and 10 effects which you can combine to your own requirements to create your own backing sound - that's a combination of 1,000 backing tracks per page, or 5,000 tracks altogether, not counting the 50 pre-mixed tracks. Of course, you can be adventurous and play more than one of each track type at the same time - which gives you practically limitless combinations - and some VERY interesting sounds! I think you'll really enjoy this resource - it's like having access to your own studio band, any time of day or night, whenever it suits YOU best - and no 'musical differences, 'personality clashes' or 'inflated egos'! Click in the link HERE to find out more. I have added ten more songs to my site in September, from Oasis, David Gray, Jack Johnson, Rod Stewart, Tom Waits, KT Tunstall, Tom Baxter, Foo Fighters, Police and Sam Cooke. There are now 1,455 song chords and lyrics on the site, 969 on the specific artist pages, and 476 between the miscellaneous Rock Songs, Pop Songs, Folk Songs, Soul/R&B, Christmas and Oldstuff pages. Dont forget to check out these pages if you cant find a specific page for the artist you're looking for. Recommended Sites - Guitar Learning Resource Sites Chris Elmore's GuitarTips site is a must visit website, with over 70 guitar lessons and tips for the learning guitarist ( and, let's face it, that's all of us! ) Check out what's on offer at: http://www.guitartips.com/ This site has a great range of tips'n'tricks for all guitarists, from the complete novice to the virtuoso. All of those nifty little things you hear other guitarists do and wonder "how did they do that?"!! Plenty of stuff on the non-members pages, and a wealth of helpful stuff if you want to sign up for membership. To get a flavour of the site, check out the GuitarTips article below, kindly supplied by Chris. Thousands of guitarists have already registered at his great new guitarist resource site Guitar Songs which works effectively as a complement to my site - great songs for guitar, but with multimedia lessons showing you how to play the songs as they should be played, intros, lead breaks, the lot! If you want to be able to accurately play songs by Pink Floyd, Joe Satriani, Evanescence, Metallica, Nirvana, Zeppelin and dozens more, Guitar Songs is where you should be! Don't forget the newest Resource Site from the same stable, Guitar-Backing-Tracks, of which I'm proud to be co-founder. Details above, or click on THIS LINK for more info. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Over the past 5 years, I have introduced thousands of my visitors to Kenny Mann's amazing Guitar Lessons site, GuitarAlliance. Kenny has developed learning methods which can really bring your guitar playing techniques forward dramatically, and quickly, whatever your current skill level. With our new partnership, signing up for GuitarAlliance lessons thru the links on this newsletter will entitle you to free subscription to GuitarAlliance Strumming School (exclusive to my visitors), which was designed by Kenny specifically with you in mind, and to complement the content on my website. There are 'mini-samples' of Kenny's guitar riffs on my Beatles, Police and Bob Marley pages. They feature sound clips to accompany the tab, so you can pause, replay etc. while you're learning. These are just a small 'taster' of what's available on Kenny's site. I've checked out just about all of the guitar learning sites on the web. GuitarAlliance is far ahead of the rest - whatever your level of proficiency, this multimedia program will make the difference between being able to play guitar, and being a Guitar Player ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In my never-ending quest for guitar-playing excellence, I came across some good recommendations for a learning video from Amazing Guitar, which can make you a better guitar player in JUST 5 DAYS! I ordered the package, which arrived on both VHS and DVD, and with a complimentary set of strings ( nice start! ). Andrew is knocking $5 off the registration fee for a limited time for visitors from this newsletter, just click on the link: Amazing Guitar. I find the power exercises are an excellent way of learning new stuff, while building up your guitar-playing stamina at the same time, I can certainly feel the benefits of this program in my lead playing, which had gotten very rusty. If you feel your guitar playing is 'stuck-in-a-rut', this program will bring you on in leaps and bounds. And that's guaranteed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recommended Site - Keyboard Resources I recently found an excellent site which teaches you to play piano, learning by ear as well as music theory. HearAndPlay is a MultiMedia keyboard lessons site with a unique teaching style which gets you actually playing songs straight away! Whether you're into Rock, Soul, Gospel, R&B, Country - Jermaine Griggs has designed a course which shows you how to recognize melody patterns, and learn new songs quickly by learning to include patterns you've already learned. A must visit site for any aspiring keyboard player - click HERE to visit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recommended Site - Vocalist Resources In May 2003, I discovered Vocal Release - a site which can really help you to develop and train your voice.... to achieve a wider range, hit the high notes that previously produced a scary squawk, and give those vocal chords the stamina to sing all night ( or until everyone else leaves.... ). The feedback from the many hundreds of my visitors who have tried this is really positive - people are amazed at the improvement this program can make to their singing. It is nice to hear from so many people who are pleased with the improvement in their range and vocal stamina, a hugely important part of performance. It had occurred to me that there are many resources on the web ( including my own humble site!) for guitar players, but I'd never happened on any site aimed at helping singers improve their performance. So I looked. And lo and behold, I found exactly what I had been searching for, at Vocal Release. Although I found it strange at first doing vocal exercises rather than just singing, I stuck with it, and even after just a short time, I found my voice control much better on songs like Radiohead's 'High & Dry' and Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' - and I'm no longer croaking out the last few songs of the night. Click here to try it for yourself, I think you'll be glad you did. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recommended Sites - Guitar Store My pride and joy is a beautiful Takamine acoustic-electric I purchased a while ago from GuitarTrader. The instrument is just peachy, best purchase I've ever made, and cost me just over 60% of the best store price I could find. I would strongly recommend that you check out GuitarTrader for their price, their quality, and the huge range of guitars, amps and equipment they stock. There is always a seasonal sale going on, their "30th Anniviersary Sale" with at least 50% off on Fender, Ibanez, Olympia, Washburn and those nifty BC Rich models has just been launched, and there are amazing specials on Ovation and Olympia guitars. If you're planning on 'passing down' the music, check out the 'Guitars for Kids' ( ...no, it's not an exchange program! ) section..... quality guitars in 'Junior' sizes, with prices starting at $119. There's also a special section for left-hander guitarists with models from Fender, Ovation, Ibanez, Takamine, Squier and more, with prices also starting at $119 for quality beginners models. Pay a visit, even if it's only to drool!! Click the 50% discount link: GuitarTrader and browse the site pictures and descriptions of guitars of all brands and models ( then click on Home to see the full range ). New special package deals are now available - just look for the 'Package Deals' lin - some amazing bargains on guitar and amp at really low prices for beginners. Sign up for their latest newsletter to be updated with the latest offers, and check out their wide range of advice and information on acoustic and electric guitars at GuitarTrader, or just follow the 'Guitars & Equipment' link from my main page Regular visitors to my site will know that I don't litter my pages with crappy ads, and
only endorse sites that I have personally checked out, and when I'm sure
that they offer value resources to my visitors. I'm obviously very
proud, as co-designer, of Guitar-Backing-Tracks
and highly recommend you try it out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recommended Sites - Site of the Month Site of the month for October is JamoRama - a very comprehensive guitar learning site.
